During a colposcopy, the woman lies on an examination table with her feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. The colposcope is then inserted into the vagina and the cervix is viewed through the scope. The colposcope magnifies the area, allowing the healthcare provider to see any abnormal cells or lesions. If abnormal cells or lesions are found, a biopsy may be performed. A biopsy involves taking a small tissue sample from the affected area for further examination in a laboratory. Colposcopy is a safe and generally well-tolerated procedure. However, some women may experience mild discomfort or cramping during the procedure.
