Colposcopy is a medical procedure that involves examining the cervix, vagina, and vulva using a special instrument called a colposcope. The procedure is usually done when there is an abnormal Pap smear or when a woman is experiencing symptoms such as vaginal bleeding or pain during intercourse. During a colposcopy, the woman lies on an examination table with her feet in stirrups, similar to a pelvic exam. The colposcope is then inserted into the vagina and the cervix is viewed through the scope. The colposcope magnifies the area, allowing the healthcare provider to see any abnormal cells or lesions. If abnormal cells or lesions are found, a biopsy may be performed. A biopsy involves taking a small tissue sample from the affected area for further examination in a laboratory. Colposcopy is a safe and generally well-tolerated procedure. However, some women may experience mild discomfort or cramping during the procedure. It is important for women to discuss any concerns or questions they may have about colposcopy with their healthcare provider. DR PRACHI THAKAR GYNEC AND BREAST CANCER SURGEON COLPOSCOPIST
